Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: Too Much for Words?

“As a certified EAP therapist, I see it happen time after time. Sometimes it’s just too much for words. Sometimes you just have to experience it. Sometimes you just have to stand in awe.”

This is the last paragraph of Horses Can Heal blog published last week on the Soul Care Collective site. When I am with a group of other equine assisted practitioners, the talk is often how do we share the essence of this work. Research shows the statistical results for various populations, but how to share the essence of the presence of a powerful, sentient being sharing space with a human who is pursuing a new piece of wholeness or who is working through a painful part of their story. That’s the difficult piece.

Beryl Markham said it best, “A lovely horse is always an experience…It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words.” And when you earn the trust of these beasts, they are always lovely.
